TESTING YOUR SUMP PUMP

It is important to make sure your Sump Pump is working well during the rainy and wet part of the seasons. When was the last time you’ve inspected your Sump Pump? Here’s a few things you can do to test your Sump Pump.

Inspect the Pump and outlet pipe – Sometimes the Sump Pump can become clogged or get dirty. Examine the Sump Pump for any signs of external damage and debris in the pit. Also make sure the outlet pipe that carries the water from the pump to the outside of your home is free of any blockage.

Make sure electrical components are working – The Sump Pump should always be plugged into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. This will allow the Sump Pump to shut off quickly when necessary to prevent a short. You may also want to try unplugging and plugging it back in to see if it turns on. You may want to consider a battery back up for times when you lose your power during storms.

Pour a bucket of water into the Sump pit – Find a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with water and slowly pour it around the Sump Pump. You should hear the pump kick on once the water level reaches the correct level below the basement floor. This should trigger the pump to start draining. If the pump does not turn on, it could be either clogged or damaged and you may want to consider calling the professionals at Colony Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning.

Schedule Sump Pump Maintenance – Annual maintenance can help ensure your Sump Pump will not fail you when you need it most. If it is 10 years or older – you may want to consider replacement. If it runs often, consider replacing it every 5-7 years.
