1. Seal up your home – Keep cold air from seeping into your home. Insulate windows and doors with weather-stripping and caulking. Capture natural heat by opening curtains on south-facing windows during the day and close them when the sun goes down to keep the warmth inside. If feasible, consider replacing old windows and updating insulation with newer more efficient versions that will make your home both more comfortable and lower your heating bill.
2. Make sure your heating system is working properly – Consider scheduling a service check up with a Trane Comfort Specialist to assure it’s running at its best (and it’s not too late!). Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted can save about five percent on heating costs. Colony’s professionals can assess your system, suggest any repairs it might need and make sure you are ready before the coldest temps arrive.
3. What thermostat setting is best?  –  Agreeing on where to set the thermostat isn’t easy. To save money, set it as low as possible while still maintaining a comfortable temperature, usually between 65 to 70 degrees. If you aren’t home during the day, consider lowering it even more. And if your household can manage it, lower your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees at night to sleep comfortably while saving on that utility bill. Compromise with the family by placing warm throw blankets on the couch, adding layers of bedding and investing in fuzzy socks.
4. Replace your filter – A dirty HVAC filter restricts air flow and increases energy usage as your system works harder to push air through it. Replace or clean filters once a month when the system is being used most to ensure that air can pass through freely. This will help to lower your heating bill.

It’s time to be efficient and save money. There are a few things you can do to help lower your utility bills at the end of each month. Sometimes we forget to take certain steps to help increase our energy efficiency.

Here are a few tips we’d like to share to make your home more energy efficient.

ENERGY SAVING TIPS

1. Have your furnace and air conditioning unit cleaned and checked annually
2. Make sure your air ducts are sealed
3. Open your blinds in the winter & close them in the summer
4. Keep you water heater at an appropriate temperature
5. Install a programmable thermostat

Let’s look into these tips a little more.

#1: Furnace and Air Conditioning clean and check

Preventative maintenance has proven itself to be the best way of insuring uninterrupted operation of your heating and cooling equipment. We take a personal interest in caring for your equipment with experienced service technicians and 24 hour service.

#2: Seal your ducts

It’s estimated that 20-30% of the air that moves through the duct work can escape due to poorly connected ducts. This makes your central Heating and Cooling system work harder and will increase your energy bills.

#3: Blinds open in winter and closed in summer

In the summer, blinds keep the sun out which can reduce heat gains by 45%. In the winter, when you let the suns heat into your home, your heating system will not have to work as hard to keep the temperature warm.

#4: Keep you water heater at an appropriate temperature

Most water heater thermostats do not tell you what the actual temperature is, rather they say “hot” or “warm.” With most water heaters, you will not want to set the temperature higher than 120 degrees. For every 10 degrees lower than 120 degrees, you’ll see a 3-5% reduction in energy costs. This will help save money over time.

#5: Upgrade to a programmable thermostat
