A new law goes into effect July 1st, 2018 requiring all Iowa homes to have a carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon Monoxide is the colorless, odorless gas given off by fireplaces, furnaces, stoves and gas ranges. It’s known as a silent killer because it’s virtually undetectable without a carbon monoxide detector.

In 2015, nearly 400 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning and upwards of 20,000 people are taken to the emergency room each year from exposure. Some of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are dizziness, headache, chest pain, and upset stomach. A CO leak is a dangerous, possibly life threatening ordeal that can be avoided by being alerted by a properly installed and working CO detector.

Installation of a CO detector is fairly easy. They can be hardwired or battery operated. Most carbon monoxide detectors last 5-7 years.
